Known as the thriving defended Roman city Venta Belgarum it was prosperous from circa 70 AD until the departure of the Romans in 410 AD, falling with much of the country into the Dark Ages. However myth and legend surround the city, snd some argue that the legends of King Arthur involve Winchester, possible as Caer Gwent, Camelot. The famous 13th c replica of the Round Table can be seen in the Great Hall.
The City of Winchester has experienced may lows, such as devastating populatiion losses from Black Death in 1348 and another plague bout in 1666, during the Civil war in 1642 the Cathedral was attacked and the West Window destroyed, in 1644 the Battle of Cheriton took place and in 1645 both the city and the castle fell to the Parliamentarians, later in 1651 the Castle was destroyed under the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Despite these disaster Winchester has retained a status of historical greatness , in King Alfred the Greats' rule (871-899) it was restored and rebuilt, as it can be seen in the Burghal Hideage into a strong and fortified capital. The Domesday Book was compiled here in 1086: the Winchester illuminated Bible was created here in 1160. Jane Austen lived and wrote locally in Chawton, dying here in 1817, whilst John Keats wrote his Ode to Autumn in 1819 after a visit to Winchester; visitors can walk the John Keats walk today that inspired his work.
Today Winchester boasts a rich historical background, a beautiful cathedral, the Peninusula Barracks built on the site of King Charles II's Palace, the Great Hall and the Round Table, and the original street plan from King Alreds' rule is still evident in the centre of the city.
Situated on the edge of the South Downs Winchester is also surrounded by natural beauty, St Catherines Hill, St Giles Hill and the water meadows all provide strunning veiws and walks. A rich combination of historical and natural beauty Winchester provides a wonderful day out. |
